UK Carnival Artists, Trans-Form 2016
We have some amazing UK artists joining us for Trans-form 2016; from Cardiff and Stoke-on-Trent to London, they come to Ahmedabad from all over the UK. Our carnival artists all specialise in working with communities to create carnival and outdoor work. Find out a little more about each one below...
ALISON DENHOLM
Alison designs projects together with artists and communities to create exciting festivals, events and carnivals. She has worked at City Arts in Nottingham for the last ten years, and in that time has led the development of their Carnival and Outdoor Arts programme. Since 2007, she has worked with artists, musicians and communities to create amazing processions, culminating in being crowned Nottingham Carnival 2015's 'Best Troupe and Band of the Year' in partnership with Nottingham's Can Samba artist collective. She has worked with artists from all over the world, including Haiti, Rio, Miami and India, and has shamelessly stolen ideas from carnivals the world over. She is looking forward to learning more in Ahmedabad. |
ANGHARAD EVANS
Angharad is a Creative Practitioner and freelance performer across a broad spectrum of the arts. She has a range of experience across many artistic disciplines including, acting, puppetry, directing, drama facilitation, music, storytelling, movement. Having recently written, produced and directed ‘In Light of Tom Mathias’ a site specific production. She has a particular interest and a vast amount of experience of working with community, immersive Theatre and Outdoor Arts, having recently worked on Ar Waith ar daith, with Walk the Plank WMC 10th Year Anniversary as a puppeteer and with Vagabondi Arts with smaller scale puppets. She has worked with National Theatre Wales, Sherman Cymru, Theatr Ffynnon. |
CAROLINE JONES
Caroline loves to make big things. She has done this for Carnival, Theatre and Events in far flung Australia, Indonesia and downtown London, working with teams of artists, children and community groups. Clients include the National Theatre, The City of London Festival, Sydney Festival, Thames Festival, EEA, Film Australia, Phakama and Ambassador Theatre Group. This amazing structure (pictured left) is 12 metres in length and was created by Caroline for London's Thames Festival. It's covered by 200,000 flowers made by school children out of recycled materials |
EMILY ANDREWS Emily is a performer, musician and maker currently living and working in Trent, she works closely with communities to develop and deliver work that has a positive social impact. Emily is one half of Andrews & Mcaleer, a not-for-profit arts organisation who currently run I See Magical Creatures UK; a visual tale that encourages people young and old to play, create, share and tell stories. Emily has spent the past few years working as an Engagement Worker and freelance artist for local organisation B Arts and, Appetite, Stoke-on-Trent's Creative People and Places program, facilitating local community groups to engage in and commission art in their area. Working with B Arts Emily has worked on night time carnival, outdoor, site responsive and site specific performances across the city and throughout Europe. In her work, Emily encourages people to believe the unbelievable and think the unthinkable through movement, making, storytelling and song. |
EMMA GAROFALO
Emma is a designer and maker of kinetic costumes, specialising in outdoor performance and carnival arts, and has been working in this field for 12 years. She regularly collaborates with leading carnival and outdoor art company's, Emergency Exit Arts, Festive Road and Mahogany. In 2014 Emma made the opening piece for community samba group, Embaixadores da Alegria for the parade of champions in Rio Carnival. Emma aims to create work that is as playful and enjoyable to wear or carry as it is to watch, "Whether it is a giant puppet or structure or simple hats and masks designed by children, I feel what's special is making an art form accessible to all. Combining the spectacle of carnival with the participation of all involved, ideas can provoke, inspire or be purely for fun, the possibilities are endless!" |
CLAIRE HORTON
Claire is the Company Project Manager for leading UK carnival arts organisation, Mandinga Arts, and produces Mandinga’s extensive annual programme of projects taking place throughout the UK and overseas. Claire will be involved in Trans-form assisting Director, Manuela Benini, in logistics and project management, as well as exploring future funding avenues and partnerships for the project to continue in 2017. Trained in Painting at Camberwell College of Arts, Claire will no doubt get stuck into the more creative side of things with the kids in Ahmedabad as well. A qualified ashtanga & vinyasa yoga instructor, Claire returns to India annually for further training and teaches weekly classes, and monthly workshops, at south London-based carnival arts centre, Sunshine International Arts. She will be attempting to wake our artists up for early morning practice at least once during the project! |
