About Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India Mission) is India's national campaign to clean the streets, roads and infrastructure of the country. The campaign was officially launched on 2 October 2014 and aims to accomplish the vision of a 'Clean India' by 2 October 2019, the 150th birthday of Mahatma Gandhi. Specific objectives are:
  1. Eliminate open defecation by constructing toilets for households and communities
  2. Eradicate manual scavenging
  3. Introduce modern and scientific municipal solid waste management practices
  4. Enable private sector participation in the sanitation sector
  5. Change people’s attitudes to sanitation and create awareness

Recycling and environmental issues are the inspiration for Trans-Form's artistic output, and UK artists design activities that will develop ways that participants can question and understand the principles of the Swachh Bharat initiative by using recycled materials and transforming waste into art.

All costumes and artefacts created with the children throughout the project are formed entirely of found waste materials, such as plastic bottles, cardboard, newspaper and plastic bags and food wrappers.

After the carnival parade, all items are either recycled responsibly, withheld by participants, or displayed in the project exhibition that takes place at an arts dedicated space in the centre of Ahmedabad.
